Every Man Needs A Shed

“A SHED IS TO A MAN WHAT A HANDBAG IS TO A WOMAN –
BOTH CONTAIN ALL THE ESSENTIALS FOR SURVIVING IN THE MODERN WORLD”

Age Concern Cheshire is running a project that will see older men meeting up in a community shed to learn new skills, share existing skills and knowledge, and generally put the world to rights over a cup of tea.

Following the successful Men’s Shed movement in Australia it is our aim to bring this innovative and exciting project to Cheshire.

The number of older men living alone in the UK has just reached one million for the first time. Research shows that for at least 400,000 older men, loneliness is their only constant companion. It also found that older men find it hard to make friends late in life; find it hard to deal with being retired and find it off putting to join social groups in the community that can be dominated by older women.

Our Men’s Shed project aims to encourage older men to come along for some shed therapy, whether they are lonely, want to chat over a cup of tea, or just get out of the house for a while. We want to engage with them and bring back their social (and self-care) skills.
